One Army post, three official names in a century
What's now Fort Bragg started life as Camp Bragg, established September 4, 1918 as a World War I field artillery training ground outside Fayetteville. In 2023 the Department of Defense renamed it Fort Liberty as part of a broader initiative to remove Confederate namesakes from military installations — the original name had honored Confederate general Braxton Bragg. In 2025 the post reverted to Fort Bragg, this time honoring a different Bragg entirely: Pfc. Roland L. Bragg, a WWII paratrooper who captured a German ambulance at the Battle of the Bulge and used it to carry wounded soldiers to safety.
